How Stress Can Affect The Workplace

Decreased Productivity

Chronic stress can hamper an employee’s ability to focus and complete tasks. A report from the

UK’s Health and Safety Executive found that work-related stress accounts for 44% of all workrelated

ill health and 54% of all working days lost due to ill health.

Absenteeism

High stress levels increase absenteeism. Statistics show that stress is the reason for over onethird

of all work-related health issues, leading to millions of lost workdays annually.

Turnover Rates

High workplace stress levels correlate with higher turnover rates. One survey revealed that 40%

of workers considered quitting their job due to stress.

Burnout

Burnout, often resulting from prolonged work-related stress, can lead to reduced job

satisfaction, physical and emotional exhaustion, and decreased performance. As per a Gallup

poll, 76% of employees experience burnout on the job at least sometimes.

Interpersonal Conflicts

Stress can increase irritability and conflict in the workplace. About 28% of workers have

reported yelling at co-workers due to workplace stress, and nearly 10% have admitted to striking

an object in anger.
